Perceived latency and multi-camera synchronization in tracking for live performance
This work investigates the relationship between the end-to-end latency of a multi-camera motion capture system and its perceptibility by performers and audience in the context of dance and interactive installations. Using the SOMA·X CORE pipeline with synchronized Femto Mega devices, we measure the delay between physical movement and the corresponding visual/sonic response generated in TouchDesigner, isolating the contributions of acquisition, data fusion and OSC transmission.
Preliminary results indicate that, keeping overall latency below the 30 ms threshold, most performers do not perceive any misalignment between gesture and feedback, while beyond 60 ms the delay becomes conscious and alters the quality of the interaction. We also discuss the impact of inter-camera synchronization on tracking stability in the presence of occlusions, and propose some practical guidelines for calibration in performance settings.
